The rich may love their dusting-raising carriages and bowers；
The poor only enjoy their cup of wine and flowers.
If you compare the poor with the rich low and high,
You'll find the one on earth,the other in the sky.
If you compare the poor while the carriage and steed,
The poor have leisure while the rich gallp with speed.
不见五陵豪杰墓，
无花无酒锄作田！
Can you find where the tombs of gallant heroes stand?
Without flowers or wine they turn into ploughland.

懒把音书寄日边，
别离经岁又经年。

I'm tired of sending letters to far-off frontier;
So long have we been separated from year to year.

(袁枚对大时代中小人物悲剧的同情，也许是共情吧。我一直无法感动于唐明皇和杨贵妃，也不同情。本书中摘下的明清诗99%都很刻板，缺乏想象力，用词也规矩无趣，但有几首议论诗写得很漂亮，比如这首，比如江山代有才人出各领风骚数百年。)

Steep Heaven's Mountain stands level with the stronghold;
